The SEC may have just laid the foundations for the next great altcoin boom—but it may also have created a more orderly route to the next generation of token disasters.

In today’s Crypto News Today deep dive, we examine the SEC’s proposed new crypto fundraising framework and whether it could bring back the initial coin offering in a regulated form. Smaller projects could potentially raise up to $5 million, while larger issuers could raise as much as $75 million in a 12-month period.

We explain how the proposed exemptions would work, why ordinary investors could once again gain access to early-stage token sales, and how a crypto asset could eventually become legally separated from the investment contract through which it was originally sold.

But an SEC filing is not an SEC endorsement. A legally compliant token can still have terrible economics, excessive insider allocations, damaging unlocks and no genuine reason for anyone to own it after the fundraising ends.

We also examine the five questions every investor should ask before buying into ICO 2.0: what the token actually provides, how large the supply can become, who controls that supply, what creates lasting demand and exactly how the project intends to spend investors’ money.

This proposal is not yet law and its final form could change. However, it could mark a major shift in how crypto projects raise money in the United States—and potentially introduce an entirely new generation of altcoins competing for investor capital.
